ICYMI: SPECTRUM NEWS: ANDREW GIULIANI WANTS TO FULLY CUT EDUCATION FUNDING FOR NEW YORK SCHOOLS

NEW YORK, NY: GOP gubernatorial candidate Andrew Giuliani said that he would cut education programs across New York if elected governor. In an appearance on Capital Tonight, Giuliani slammed funding for New York’s schools, educators, and students.

When asked how he would lower taxes by cutting programs, Giuliani said, “Well I think immediately we have to go and we have to look at the teacher’s union, we have to look at the fact that it’s over $31 billion.”

After learning that the $31 billion of state funding goes directly to education and not the teacher’s union, Giuliani doubled down, “That’s the teacher’s union. They’re one in the same. I understand that sometimes we want to talk about it and take education differently, that’s how we want to do it, but really I’m a big believer in bringing the free market into education.”

“You will get the highest tax cut and budget cut in the history of our state in a Gov. Giuliani,” he stated.

When asked which programs he would cut, Giuliani pointed to education.  “I think immediately we have to go and we have to look at the teachers’ union. And we have to look that it’s over $31 billion and I understand a lot of that comes from property taxes as well,” he said.

When Capital Tonight pointed out that $31 billion is the entire education budget for the state of New York, Giuliani said that education and the teachers’ union are “one and the same.”

“I’m a big believer in bringing the free market into education,” he said. “I don’t think the teachers’ union should decide, exclusively, what our child’s education should be.”

Giuliani said by the end of his first term, he will move to raise the charter school cap from 460 to over 1,000.
