New York State Democratic Party Kicks Off Defend Choice Week of Action
Week of action will include events to connect volunteers to organizing opportunities to fight back against Lee Zeldin’s anti-choice agenda
NEW YORK, NY – The New York State Democratic Party today is launching a Defend Choice Week of Action as part of a national push that will run from July 12-19 to mobilize supporters and engage voters across the country to call out Republicans like New York’s Republican nominee for governor, Lee Zeldin, for opposing abortion rights, highlight what is at stake in November, and organize to elect Democrats up and down the ballot as the backstop to protecting abortion rights.
To get involved in the Week of Action, New Yorkers can visit www.DefendChoice.org for local organizing opportunities.
The local week of action comes after the right-wing Supreme Court’s extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and attack women’s reproductive freedoms. In New York, Lee Zeldin has praised the decision and has been clear about his extremist views. He said appointing a pro-life health commissioner would be a “great idea” and promised to grant anti-abortion advocates “open door” access to his office if elected governor.
“Republicans’ decades-long attack on reproductive rights is the root of the conservative Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade – and now Lee Zeldin is going even further to restrict abortion rights in New York. Defend Choice Week of Action is a chance for New Yorkers to turn their outrage into action by working with the New York State Democratic Party to hold far-right Republicans like Lee Zeldin accountable and help elect Democrats up and down the ticket to protect their rights,” said New York State Democratic Party Spokesperson James Martin.
