[Jones’] entrance into the race sets up a primary clash with Liz Gereghty, an education advocate and the sister of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, in a must-win district for House Democrats. Former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) lost it last fall to Republican Michael Lawler. When Jones was in Congress, he previously represented 75 percent of the current district.

Polling conducted by EMC research in early May found Jones trailing Lawler by 2 percentage points, 48 percent to 50 percent, within the margin of error. The survey of 300 likely general election voters was conducted on behalf of two Democratic groups, End Citizens United and Let America Vote. A generic Democrat, however, beat a generic Republican by 1 point, 49 percent to 48 percent. ECU has endorsed Jones in the past.
